Health benefits of ingredients (healthy hot chocolate)
Cacao:
Cocoa and cacao are not created equal. Cacao is roasted at a lower temperature, allowing the bean to retain most of its nutrients. The cacao bean itself is loaded with antioxidants, which are anti-inflammatory, reduce chronic disease risk (like cancer, Alzheimers, arthritis), and slow cell aging. Like most beans and plant foods, cacao is full of fiber, which stabilizes blood glucose levels and maintains a healthy gut flora.
The bean itself is also an excellent source of iron, protein, magnesium and potassium. There’s a reason this powerful bean has been deemed a superfood, although this may not be the reason so many people enjoy it.
Fun Cacao Fact: Mayan and Aztec cultures used cacao as a post-battle reward for warriors.
Dates:
Dates are one of the most naturally sweet foods out there. Unlike refined sugars, the sugar from dates is balanced by the high fiber content, meaning it won’t cause weight gain, or spike blood glucose levels. That’s why it’s been deemed the perfect natural sweetener for the health conscious consumer!
Beyond that, dates have an easy time living up to their name as a superfood. Most notably, 1 cup of dates contain about 50% of your daily recommended fiber intake, a nutrient that 97% of Americans are deficient in.
The flavonoids, carotenoids and phenolic acid promote a healthy heart, brain, and eyes while fighting chronic disease like cancer, Alzheimers, macular degeneration and heart disease.
Fun Date Fact: Dates were the first fruit to be cultivated by humans and have been around 50 million years.
Ginger:
Ginger contains gingerol, which is known to calm an upset stomach and feelings of nausea (ever heard of drinking ginger ale if you’re feeling unwell?). Gingerol does much more than just settle tummy aches and aid digestion. This compound reduces oxidative stress which can prevent disease, reduce inflammation and slow cell aging.
For folks looking to trim down, ginger might be a healthy way to do just that. Those who supplemented with ginger found that their hip to waist ratio changed dramatically. In addition, those who consume ginger regularly, are at a lower risk of heart disease, blood sugar spikes, and cholesterol levels.
Like many of these other superfoods, ginger is shown to reduce the chances of cancer and Alzherimers. This is why we've added it to our vegan hot chocolate mix.
Fun Ginger Fact: For the Austronesians, ginger had religious significance, and was used in rituals for healing and for asking protection from spirits.
Cinnamon:
Although you may know cinnamon primarily from pumpkin spice, apple pie and hot cider, it does much more than just warm our lips in fall time. The spice itself comes from a bark that contains anti-bacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties.
We’ve all heard of probiotics, but prebiotics are just as important and you guessed it, can be found in cinnamon! These support healthy gut bacteria growth, which can improve anything from mood, to heart function.
Like most spices, cinnamon contains powerful antioxidants that prevent disease and slow cell aging. More notably though, cinnamon helps open blood vessels and helps oxygen flow throughout the body.
Fun Cinnamon Fact: If you add cinnamon to your face mask (don’t leave on for more than a few minutes) it helps with circulation.
Maca:
Did you know that Maca powder, the superfood, is actually the root of a cruciferous veggie? It’s quite earthy and powdery, so why do people add it to their smoothies and take it in capsule form? Because the health benefits are out of this world. In fact, just 1oz contains 133% of your RDI of vitamin C… talk about an immunity boost.
Maca can help to increase fertility in men, and reduce menopausal symptoms in women. A little something for everyone!
The best benefit of maca is that it can actually improve your mood, and boost your energy and athletic performance. Start your day off with a smile. No wonder the root also helps improve memory and concentration. Boost both brain and mind power!
Fun Maca Fact: When applied to skin, maca can work as a sunblock.
Ashwagandha:
Like many superfoods and herbs, Ashwagandha is used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. Primarily, it's used to decrease stress and increase energy levels. Talk about clean energy.
For chronically stressed adults, ashwagandha may help to reduce cortisol spikes. Similarly, the superfood helps with anxiety, even those with diagnosed stress and anxiety disorders, including a 69% reduction in symptoms. Furthermore, ashwagandha improves brain function like memory by protecting nerve cells from free radicals.
By fighting inflammation and tumor growth with antioxidants, ashwagandha may fight cancer growth and reduce chances of developing other noncommunicable diseases.
Fun Ashwagandha Fact: Ashwagandha boosts fertility and testosterone in men.
Cardamon:
This powerfully fragrant spice has a floral and fruity scent and flavor. It’s scientifically proven to reduce blood pressure, possibly due to its extraordinary antioxidant content. These antioxidant properties, as we know, prevent and fight chronic disease and inflammation.
Because of its antibacterial properties, cardamom can prevent oral infections, and prevent bad breath caused by bacteria. Even just breathing cardamom can help improve lung functions, and oxygen distribution.
In addition, the spice aids in weight loss, liver protection and even lower blood sugar levels.
Fun Cardamon Fact: Cardamom is used in both sweet and savory dishes.
Chaga:
These mushrooms are quite popular, as they are extremely nutrient dense, including a high concentration of immunity boosting properties and antioxidants. Chaga "slows the aging process" due to its ability to reduce oxidative stress. In addition, studies have shown that chaga mushrooms can not only prevent cancer, but potentially destroy tumors, although human studies have not been conducted.
Fun Chaga Fact: Health conscious folks use powdered chaga in their morning coffee to boost the nutrient density.
What will drinking this superfood mix every day do for you?
In addition to all of the benefits from each individual product, all in all this superfood is extremely nutrient dense. Consumers overlook nutrient density when it comes to nutrition. Protein, carbs and calories seem to take the spotlight, because it’s quite profitable and marketing agencies have made sure of that. For instance, making something “low calorie” or “high protein” in much cheaper than making a product that is “nutrient dense”. In reality, nutrient density is much more valuable to fight and reverse disease, and manage a healthy weight.
Spices, like the ones found in this superfood mix are loaded with antioxidants. Antioxidants are compounds that stop oxidation.
Fun fact: every living thing on the planet, including humans, produces their own antioxidants.
When it comes to getting antioxidants from our food, plant-based foods can't be beat. They've got the greatest concentration of antioxidants. Vitamin C, vitamin E, and flavonoids are a few of the essential antioxidants we can get from plant-based foods.
In general, antioxidants can slow the aging process and reduce inflammation, but some of the best ones for the job include: polyphenols, ubiquinol, and botanical antioxidants such as curcumin, resveratrol, and green tea polyphenols.
Essentially, high antioxidant density results in:
-Less inflammation
-Disease prevention (cancer, heart disease, autoimmune diseases…)
-Slower cell aging
-Faster muscle recovery
-Smoother, healthier skin
-Healthier organs
