Quick Take
It's human nature to get overwhelmed over the holidays and sometimes, when things feel like too much, we indulge a little...or maybe even a lot. And, look — that's OK! But if the holidays have you feeling like you've fallen back into familiar habits and you want to reboot your WFPB diet, we've got some helpful hacks to get back into the swings of things.

What to Do When the Holidays Derailed Your WFPB Diet: 5 Steps to Rebooting!
1. Dismiss Guilt and Refuse to Dwell
The holidays are a time for celebration and sometimes, indulgence. And you’re human! There is no reason to feel guilty about straying from your WFPB diet over the holidays. This isn’t an all or nothing deal, and you haven’t “failed.” Take a moment to forgive yourself, take a step back, and reassess your goals.
Why did you start eating a WFPB diet in the first place? What has eating more fruits and vegetables allowed you to do differently? Has it changed the quality of your life? If so, it’s time to get back in the saddle! This is an opportunity, not a failure.
2. Take the Pressure Off
Even if you were 100% WFPB before the holiday season, you might not be able to jump back to that place overnight, cold turkey (no pun intended). Ease back into it by incorporating some of your go-to plant-based dishes into your weekly plan. Use dairy and meat as a garnish until you’re ready to reduce it, or eliminate it all together. Grocery shop on a full stomach, and choose plant based, whole ingredients so when you’re home and hungry you have an abundance of fruits and veggies to cook with. Choose one new WFPB recipe a week to tackle. Time to get cookin’!
3. Come Up With a Game Plan
Set some obtainable goals, and come up with a plan to reach them. Do you want to start by eliminating oil, refined grains, or refined sugar first? Sometimes eliminating one at a time can take the pressure off, and then won’t seem like such a drastic change. Here are a few examples:
- This week I will eat two servings of leafy greens a day.
- This week I will cook with veggie broth instead of oil.
- This week I will snack on nuts and fruits instead of processed snacks.
- This week I will only use cheese as a garnish, not as a main ingredient.
- This week I will eat at least one piece of fruit with each breakfast.
4. One Meal at a Time
If you start back up on your WFPB diet and things seem to be going great...but you eat an entire bag of chips in a matter of minutes in front of the TV after your kids have gone to bed, I hear you, I see you, and I want you to take a deep breath and let it go! That's right: don’t sweat it! Start again fresh after your throw that chip bag away.
Instead of thinking “I failed my diet," reframe it to, “wow, I’ve eaten almost entirely plant based this last week!” Beating yourself up helps nobody, and actually can make it easier to give up on your goals. Start with your next meal; I bet you can make it at least 80 percent whole food plant based. Then, try to make your next meal 85 percent WFPB.
5. Don’t Expect Physical Results Right Off the Bat
Maybe you put on a few pounds over the holidays, maybe you’re just feeling a little run down from eating more junk foods, or maybe you have been noticing little things — like acne, disrupted sleep, or stomach upset — easing their way back into your life. Changing back to a WFPB diet may not make you drop five pounds overnight, but it certainly will make you feel a lot better once you get back into your healthy patterns.
Weight loss will come, but sometimes the other positive side effects of a plant based diet expose themselves first. After all, you’re healing from the inside out. Patience, my friends!
