As we at MamaSezz well know, changing to a plant-based diet can change your life in ways you never expected. In this series, we talk with some of the world’s most soulful, dedicated (and often funny) individuals. We get to hear their stories of suffering, transformation, and service — and we learn how food is an essential part of their journey.
This week, we're talking with Dr. Kusher, who after using scientific data to search for the healthiest diet, came across a whole food plant-based one. As he treats his patients, he further reinforces the power of a healthy diet.
What prompted your interest in a plant-based diet?
It's all about the science...after investigating every option out there, and realizing humans were built to subsist on plants, I opted for 100% vegan long ago. As a practitioner, I further researched and later saw within my practice how making this choice positively impacted my patients' health.
It was a no brainer for myself, and I now gently guide my patients who are willing to listen, down that same path.
What happened?
The more recent moment which fortified my long-ago decision was related to the documentaries now available: What The Health, Forks Over Knives, Game Changers, etc. Although I had never let myself drift towards poor health, adopting the WFPB route further optimized all my health markers.
How were you able to stick with such a dramatic diet change?
It was pretty easy for me...I have never had much of a taste for meat, just had to get away from the more processed foods.
Like any habit, repetition was the key, and I rarely fall back, as I see the consequences every day in my practice.
What is your life like now?
Very fulfilling...I know I am practicing those things for great health and longevity, showing compassion for my fellow creatures, and helping reduce the impact on the planet from climate change. When your life revolves around caring for others, it's a rewarding path to follow.
What is your favorite MamaSezz food/dish?
A tie between the Lazy Lasagna, and the Protein Strips.
What are you most proud of?
Just plain doing good; when you put the welfare of others first, good things always come back to you.
If you could meet and have lunch with one person (alive or dead) who would it be?
Believe it or not, Sylvester Stallone. I'm a Rocky fan for the boxing, but more importantly, his films often revolve around how perseverance can be the key to overcoming any hurdle, even for underdogs. You may have to dig deep to see his messages, but once found, they are worth the dive.
